Sounds like a plan. Pick something tried and tested with plenty of exisiting frameworks so that you can get straight down to the gameplay! After all it's not the language, or the IDE or even the framework that make the game, it's YOU :-)

I and my team have been tracking time for the execution of each tasks, but I haven't counted "administration stuff" like e-mail and task description typing. It is a good idea for a next project.

I found that much of my programmer's time, about 20-30% of 11 months of development, was dedicated to make the framework needed for our 2D C# game - since there were no good 2D framework available that wasn't using XNA. The funny thing was that the lead programmer chose C# because there would be needed a long time, according to him at least 2 months, for all programmers to learn and use the "hard" C++ fluently.

In the end, the "easier" C# language became a waste of time, much greater than learning C++ from scratch. Not counting the issues on deploying casual or indie games with the .NET Framework. Next project, we are going to LEARN and use C++, and pick a good framework or engine, because we should focus on the gameplay I believe. :)

Thanks! Hopefully you are working harder than I am ;-) Well because the spreadsheet is about a game that I've signed a non-disclosure agreement for, regretably I can show it to you. But I can describe it more and I'll do that in another post soon, so keep your eyes peeled...

This is great! I wish more people volunteered detail information like this. It is a great resource for benchmarking how hard I should (or should not) be working. I was hoping you'd give us a peek at your spreadsheet for inspiration?
