I have just obtained a review copy of 3D Graphics with XNA Game Studio 4.0 from www.packtpub.com.

I started programming 3D graphics when I was about 12. In those days it was all wireframe graphics on BBC Micros 🙂 Then I moved up to filled 3D shapes on my Amiga. After a brief return to some 3D stuff in Delphi over 10 years ago, I haven’t touched 3D stuff since. I love 2D games (and they are simpler to make), but I have been getting that 3D itch again. So when I was offered a review copy of this book which is about 3D graphics in my favourite language (XNA), I was naturally pleased.

I’ve skimmed the book and it seems very comprehensive. It starts with the basics and goes though shaders, lighting, shadows, particle effects, environmental effects and more! It also covers animation. There are tons of code samples and nifty diagrams that should help an out of touch dude like me get back into it. It’s available as a book or ebook.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

OMG!!! I can see BlitzMax now sitting in a corner crying its little eyes out 😛

Would you call XNA a language though? Its more like a module for .NET be it C# or VB.net etc…

What type of 3D games would you make? Ive always like 3D games, but when I tried them using Blitz3D the media (models, textures etc) were either too expensive or my media just sucks!

Lol. Yeah XNA isn’t really a language but C# and XNA really rock. As for 3D games, well I could use some 3D effects in 2D casual games, I’ve seen that done well before. Or I’d make some kind of 2.5D game, like a platformer, or an overheard exploring game. I also have a fondness for space shooters. Who knows, it may not happen for a while, 2D still has plenty of potential 😉
